Management of Neuromuscular Diseases
Neuromuscular medicine focuses on the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular diseases. These diseases occur when there’s an issue with your peripheral nerves, muscles, or the communication between them. There are hundreds of types of neuromuscular disorders. The most common symptom is muscle weakness.
The Neuromuscular Center
The Neuromuscular Center at UConn Health specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders that affect the peripheral nerves, muscles, or neuromuscular junction (where the neuron connects to the muscle). Using a comprehensive approach, our team of fellowship-trained physicians provides a full spectrum of diagnostic services, including nerve conduction studies with electromyography (EMG), peripheral nerve MRI, compressive laboratory, genetic testing, nerve, muscle, or skin biopsies, and referrals for physical therapy, orthotic devices, or other services if needed.
Neurodiagnostic Laboratory
The Neurodiagnostic Laboratory at UConn Health, located on the third floor of the Connecticut Tower, provides state-of-the-art testing to evaluate the peripheral nervous system through electromyography (EMG) as well as nerve conduction testing (NCS). Our lab is accredited through the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM). Our laboratory performs over 1,000 EMG studies a year.
