Endocrinology & Diabetes Specialties

UConn Health is your trusted destination for endocrine and diabetes care. Our dedicated specialists are here to provide individualized diagnoses, management, and treatments for a variety of conditions. Our approach is always patient-centered, and we utilize leading-edge technologies to help tailor your care to your unique needs.

Some of the endocrine conditions we specialize in include:

  • Adrenal Gland Disorders

The adrenal glands are located on top of the kidneys and secrete adrenaline, aldosterone, and cortisol. These hormones help maintain salt balance and blood pressure while supporting fluid balance in the body.

We also specialize in diagnosing, managing, and treating Addison’s disease, Cushing’s syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, and adrenal cancer.

  • Diabetes & Pancreatic Disorders

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not properly use sugar, leading to high blood sugar levels. Symptoms may include frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, and blurry vision. If you have one or more of these symptoms, see your doctor to find out whether you might be prediabetic or have diabetes.

    Treatment, Care & Education

  • Endocrine Tumors

The Endocrine Neoplasia Program at the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center is dedicated to evaluating and treating endocrine tumors and their structural and hormonal symptoms. Our experienced team provides clinical services in the management of thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, adrenal gland tumors (such as Cushing's disease, primary hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, and adrenal cancer), neuroendocrine tumors, and pituitary tumors.

We perform dynamic endocrine testing, nuclear medicine scanning, thyroid ultrasound, fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid, management of thyroid cancer with radioactive iodine and whole-body scanning, advanced treatment of pheochromocytomas, and invasive radiology interventions, including petrosal sinus sampling, adrenal vein sampling, and selective pancreatic calcium infusions.

  • Gonadal Dysfunction (Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, PCOS, Low Testosterone)

Gonadal dysfunction affects the ovaries in females and the testes in males, leading to issues such as infertility, sexual dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and overall well-being. Symptoms may include menstrual problems in females, decreased muscle mass, and changes in hair growth in males.

  • Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle medicine is medical care that focuses on healthy, evidence-based lifestyle habits to help prevent, treat, and even reverse certain chronic health conditions, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Lifestyle medicine is often practiced in a group setting, using six pillars to target areas where patients can improve their health.

  • Parathyroid Gland Disorders

The parathyroid glands are four small glands behind the thyroid gland that secrete parathyroid hormone, which regulates calcium levels in the body.

One of the most common parathyroid disorders is hyperparathyroidism. It may cause thinning of the bones, known as osteoporosis, along with additional kidney problems.

Our board-certified endocrinologists specialize in diagnosing and managing disorders of the parathyroid gland and its adverse effects on bone health.

  • Pituitary Gland Disorders

The pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain, is the master endocrine gland and secretes hormones that control the activity of other glands, such as the ovaries, testes, adrenals, and thyroid.

Our UConn Health endocrinologists specialize in diagnosing, managing, and treating pituitary tumors, such as prolactinomas, growth hormone-secreting tumors, Cushing's disease, etc.  In addition, we manage other pituitary disorders such as pituitary hormone deficiency and diabetes insipidus.

  • Thyroid Gland Disorders

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, makes and secretes thyroid hormones that regulate your metabolism and various processes throughout the body.

Our board-certified endocrinologists specialize in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of:

    • Hyperthyroidism - the overproduction of hormones that can cause heart palpitations, sweating, and weight loss
    • Hypothyroidism - the underproduction of hormones that can cause fatigue, weight gain, and constipation
    • Thyroiditis - inflammation of the thyroid gland
    • Goiter - enlargement of the thyroid gland
