Types of Hearing Tests

Depending on your age and symptoms, you may get one or more of these hearing tests:

  • Comprehensive Audiologic Evaluation:
    • Pure-tone audiometry test to measure your ability to hear high and low sounds at different pitches (frequency)
    • Bone conduction test to detect inner ear problems
    • Speech discrimination tests to check your ability to hear and repeat spoken words
  • Tympanometry to detect middle ear problems that affect hearing, such as an eardrum rupture
  • Acoustic reflex test to evaluate how your middle ear responds to sounds
  • Distortion Product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) test to assess inner ear functions in infants, children, and patients receiving ototoxic medications

Diagnostic Audiology Tests

In addition to comprehensive audiologic evaluations, we offer:

  • Auditory brainstem response (ABR) test: This evoked potentials study assesses how your brain and auditory (hearing) nerve respond to sounds.
  • Videonystagmography (VNG) test: A VNG test evaluates eye movements that can contribute to inner ear disorders, including vestibular balance disorders & vertigo.
  • Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) test: This test measures the electrical activity in neck muscles (sternocleidomastoid) in response to sound stimuli, helping to diagnose various vestibular disorders
