Shin Splints

What Is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome?

Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS or shin splints) is a common injury that affects runners and dancers. It is characterized by pain in the lower leg. Shin splints are caused by repeated trauma to the connective muscle tissue surrounding the shinbone. Ignoring this injury may result in a more serious condition such as a stress fracture of the bones.

Diagnosis

Shin splints are usually diagnosed based on your medical history and a physical examination. Your doctor may request an X-ray or other images to gather more information.

Treatment

Conservative treatment is typically successful. Focus on rest and ice to reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapy may also be beneficial. Your doctor or therapist may recommend orthotics.
