Endoscopic Ultrasound

What Is an Endoscopic Ultrasound?

An endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) allows the doctor to see inside and around the outside of the esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and duodenum (beginning of the small intestine). The procedure involves placing a thin, flexible tube with a special camera (called an endoscope) through the mouth and into the stomach. A device that transmits and receives sound waves (ultrasound) is built into the end of the instrument. A similar instrument may also be used in the rectum to view this area. The endoscope makes it possible to see and sometimes obtain small samples (biopsies) from the areas being tested. In some cases, a very thin needle may be passed through the wall of the intestine to sample abnormal areas (fine needle aspiration) or inject medications.

Procedure Instruction

The procedure normally takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Medications are typically given just before the procedure to help you relax and avoid pain. The entire procedure is usually painless, and most people remember very little about the test.

Fortunately, complications are uncommon. The most common complications are perforation (tear) of the esophagus, stomach, or rectum, 1 in 1,000; bleeding, 1 in 500; and heart or lung problems related to the sedative given, 1 in 5,000.
