Emergency Dental Services
UConn Health provides Connecticut with the largest dental emergency service through the UConn School of Dental Medicine Dental Care Center and the UConn John Dempsey Hospital Emergency Department. Our mission is to provide people with the dental care they need when they need it most.
UConn School of Dental Medicine Dental Care Center
Emergency dental care is available for patients 16 and older without an appointment during regular clinic hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Emergency Dental Care at UConn John Dempsey Hospital
The Emergency Department (ED) is open 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Patients of all ages will be evaluated and treated by an emergency medicine provider when seeking emergency care.
For emergency dental concerns:
- Patients aged 16 and older can receive emergency dental care during regular Dental Care Center hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During non-regular hours, the ED team may consult the on-call dentist from the UConn School of Dental Medicine if needed.
- Patients under age 16 can receive emergency pediatric dental care from specialists who are available at the Connecticut Children’s Emergency Department.
Please note: Separate bills will be issued from the hospital and the dental provider.
Emergency Dental Care Treatment
Many dental emergencies, including tooth extractions and root canals, are not usually performed after hours in the Emergency Department; however, your complete care plan will be determined after an emergency provider’s assessment. Part of that plan may be to:
- Receive immediate care in our Emergency Department;
- Be seen in our Dental Care Center during regular hours; or
- Make an appointment with your primary dentist during their regular hours.
- Patients under age 16, may be referred or transferred to receive care from emergency pediatric dental care specialists who are available at the Connecticut Children’s Emergency Department.
