What Is a Skull Base Tumor?
Skull base tumors are tumors that develop in the base of the skull under the brain. Most skull base tumors are noncancerous, or benign, but they are still dangerous and challenging to treat because of their proximity to main arteries, nerves, and the spinal column.
Symptoms
The symptoms of a skull base tumor may include:
- Changes to your vision
- Difficulty talking
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Hearing loss
- Neck pain
Diagnosis
If your doctor suspects you may have a skull base tumor, he will order medical tests. Those tests will usually include blood or urine tests to check for certain properties and imaging tests, such as a CT scan or MRI, which will allow the doctor to see the potential tumor.
Treatment
There are a few different ways to treat skull base tumors. Many are treated surgically where the surgeon will remove the tumor. They can also be treated with certain medications, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. The course of treatment varies depending on each patient’s individual circumstances.
