Important Update on Your ConnectiCare Insurance Coverage
We’re committed to innovating, expanding, and maintaining financial health. Now, it’s time for health insurers like ConnectiCare to do their part. Join us in encouraging ConnectiCare to agree to a fair contract for both us and the people of Connecticut.
At UConn Health, our priority is providing high-quality care to our patients and community.
While we continue to negotiate in good faith toward a new agreement with ConnectiCare, they have shown little urgency to resolve this matter and have yet to present a proposal that fairly reflects the true cost of care we provide. Their delays have stalled meaningful progress, putting patients at risk of losing in-network access to UConn Health, including UConn Medical Group, if no agreement is reached before June 14.
Due to Connecticut’s mandatory “cooling-off” period, you will be able to continue to access care at in-network rates through June 14, 2025.
We remain committed to finding a resolution, but we also want to ensure you have the information you need to plan for your care.
ConnectiCare patients who receive behavioral health services are unaffected by this negotiation and can continue to use their behavioral health benefits as covered through Optum Behavioral Health.
What You Can Do
- Call ConnectiCare. Using the number on the back of your insurance card, call ConnectiCare directly and, with a sense of urgency, ask them to negotiate to protect your access to care—just as we are doing. Let ConnectiCare know how vital it is to have in-network access to your trusted providers at UConn Health.
- Apply for Continuity of Care benefits. If you are in an active course of treatment or already have a procedure scheduled, you may be eligible to continue receiving care at in-network rates beyond June 14. We urge you to contact ConnectiCare to ask about your options to start the waiver process.
For the latest updates, check back for additional information, or please contact our patient support team at 860-679-0199.
Important: Emergency care is always covered at in-network rates. If you or a loved one experiences a medical emergency, please go to the nearest emergency room, including UConn John Dempsey Hospital.
For Patients
What are Continuity of Care benefits?
Right now, nothing changes. You can continue to see your UConn Health doctors, receive services at UConn John Dempsey Hospital, and receive care as you normally would. If an agreement is not reached by April 15, UConn Health will become out-of-network with ConnectiCare, but you will still have in-network access through June 14 due to Connecticut’s mandatory cooling-off period.
Why is UConn Health negotiating with ConnectiCare?
We have been working with ConnectiCare for several months to secure a fair contract that adequately covers the true cost of delivering high-quality care. ConnectiCare reimburses UConn Health at a rate that is amongst the lowest when compared to other health systems across the state, despite our excellent quality, safety, and outcomes. As Connecticut’s only public academic medical center, we are committed to continuing our service to this community, and we urge ConnectiCare to prioritize its members’ access to the providers they know and trust.
What happens after June 14, 2025?
If an agreement is not reached, UConn Health will be out-of-network with ConnectiCare, meaning your out-of-pocket costs could increase. However, some patients may qualify for Continuity of Care benefits, allowing them to continue treatment at in-network rates for a limited time. Contact ConnectiCare to see if you qualify.
What are Continuity of Care benefits?
Continuity of Care benefits allow patients to continue receiving care at in-network rates for a period of time, even if their provider is out-of-network with their health insurance company. Typically, patients who are receiving active treatment for a serious or chronic condition, pregnant, already scheduled for a surgery or procedure, undergoing treatment for cancer or another critical illness, and/or receiving behavioral health or substance abuse treatments are eligible to receive Continuity of Care benefits. Contact ConnectiCare by calling the number on the back of your insurance card to learn more.
Should I start canceling my appointments now?
No, we are continuing to negotiate for a new agreement with ConnectiCare. You will continue to have in-network access through June 14 due to Connecticut’s mandatory “cooling-off” period and should continue to seek care with your trusted UConn Health providers as you normally would.
UConn Health has canceled my appointment — why?
UConn Health is canceling all ConnectiCare patient appointments scheduled after June 14. As of that date, we will be considered out-of-network with ConnectiCare. As a result, visits may no longer be covered at in-network rates, potentially increasing your out-of-pocket costs.
If you have out-of-network benefits, we recommend contacting ConnectiCare to confirm your coverage. If you're eligible and choose to proceed with care, you may call UConn Health to reschedule your appointment—just inform our scheduling staff of your out-of-network status.
What if I have out-of-network benefits?
You will maintain in-network coverage through Connecticut’s mandatory “cooling-off” period, through June 14. If an agreement is not reached by that date and you wish to seek care after June 14, please contact ConnectiCare to inquire about your out-of-network benefits. After June 14, seeking care at UConn Health may result in changes to your costs.
What if I am visiting UConn Health for Behavioral Health services?
Behavioral health services for ConnectiCare patients are not impacted by this termination. Patients can continue to see their behavioral health providers for in-network services beyond June 14.
What if I am visiting UConn Health for Dental services?
Dental services are contracted under a separate agreement and are not affected by our contract negotiations with ConnectiCare. UConn Health would remain in-network for Dental services. Exceptions include Oral Surgery, Oral Radiology, and Oral Pathology. These services are covered under the medical benefit and will be out of network starting on June 15, 2025. ConnectiCare is required to offer a Continuity of Care provision, which may allow services to continue as in-network. Approval must be coordinated through the servicing physician and ConnectiCare. Patients need to initiate the process by calling ConnectiCare at the number on the back of their insurance card. Services not approved for Continuity of Care.
Can I still go to UConn John Dempsey Hospital in an emergency?
Yes! Emergency care is always covered at in-network rates. If you or a loved one experiences a medical emergency, please go to the nearest emergency room, which includes UConn John Dempsey Hospital.
How can I help?
You can help by calling ConnectiCare and letting them know how important it is to keep UConn Health in network. Their phone number can be found on the back of your insurance card.

For Providers
Does ConnectiCare’s possible contract termination with UConn Health impact both its inpatient and outpatient providers?
Yes, this would impact all providers across UConn Health inpatient and outpatient facilities, as negotiations with ConnectiCare relate to our managed care contracts for both UConn John Dempsey Hospital and UConn Medical Group. As a result, our hospital and all our UConn Health providers would be deemed out-of-network for ConnectiCare health plan patients starting April 15, 2025, though due to the “cooling-off” period, patients will have continued access at in-network rates through June 14, 2025.
Could I still admit my ConnectiCare patients in need to UConn John Dempsey Hospital?
As of June 15, 2025, no. If our contract terminates with ConnectiCare on April 15, 2025, and the cooling-off period expires on June 14, 2025, without a new contract in place, all providers at UConn Health would lose the ability to admit patients with this insurance to UConn John Dempsey Hospital for their ConnectiCare members.
An exception to this is if your patient has been approved for Continuity of Care; in that case, the patient would remain in network. Should contracts with ConnectiCare terminate, UConn Health will be helping providers arrange for alternate admitting privileges at another nearby in-network hospital. Note, providers who already have admitting privileges at other in-network hospitals can continue to care for ConnectiCare patients at the alternate facility.
I am a UConn Health provider with other hospital admitting rights. Do I need to take action to prepare?
No. Providers who already have admitting privileges at other hospitals that are in network with ConnectiCare can continue to admit and care for their ConnectiCare patients at those non-UConn Health hospital locations.
What could contract termination mean for my current patients with ConnectiCare insurance?
Out-of-network benefits depend on the health insurance plan, but typically, patients can expect to pay more for care, up to and including 100% of the costs out of their pockets. In the event we do not reach an agreement before June 15, patients should reach out to ConnectiCare to learn more about their out-of-network benefits before seeking care with UConn Health.
Does ConnectiCare’s possible contract termination with UConn Health impact its Behavioral Health providers?
Behavioral health services for ConnectiCare patients are not impacted by this termination. Patients can continue to see their behavioral health providers for in-network services beyond June 14.
Does ConnectiCare’s possible contract termination with UConn Health impact its Dental providers?
Dental services are contracted under a separate agreement and are not affected by our contract negotiations with ConnectiCare. UConn Health Dental providers would remain in-network for Dental services. Exceptions include Oral Surgery, Oral Radiology, and Oral Pathology. These services are covered under the medical benefit and will be considered out of network starting on June 15, 2025. ConnectiCare is required to offer a Continuity of Care provision, which may allow services to continue as in-network. Approval must be coordinated through the servicing physician and ConnectiCare. Patients need to initiate the process by calling ConnectiCare at the number on the back of their insurance card.
What if my patients still need my care?
If we are unable to reach an agreement with ConnectiCare, please know there will be some provisions in place beyond the April 15, 2025, contract termination, including the mandatory cooling-off period, which extends in-network access through June 15, 2025. Some patients may be eligible to remain at UConn Health for their continuity of care in network, especially those in active treatment for pregnancy, chronic disease, and life-threatening conditions such as cancer. Should the need arise for your patient to initiate a continuity of care request with ConnectiCare, they can visit www.connecticare.com for the online form or call ConnectiCare at the Member Services number listed on their ConnectiCare ID card.
